What do artists really want?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

I often sit together with other people working in the music industry and discuss the past, present and the future of the music industry (may it be on panel, at conferences or in the pub) and all the great opportunities artists have these days to become successful. What is interesting is that the people involved in those conversation often are not directly affected by any of those issues, they don’t write or produce music and they don’t try to sell it either. Essentially what we get is a bunch of so-called ‘experts’ (I don’t exclude myself from that) talking about how great things are actually looking for artists and labels without really feeling the pain that companies and individuals are going through in the current changing times.

An example: you often hear the idea that artists should give away their music for free to then make money from live performances. Again, most of the time the people who are saying this will not be the guys that will go on tour for months. What about if the artist doesn’t want to sit in a van for weeks and weeks? What if their music of not suitable to be performed live?

I would like to hear more from the artists in those discussions. Or maybe it is even better to hear the managers as they will have the business background as well as being able to represent the artists opinions. Sounds like this could be a good topic for a future OpenMusicMedia Meet

The Archive: the world’s biggest record collection is for sale

The Archive from Sean Dunne on Vimeo.

This is a beautiful, almost heartbreaking little video. Anyone got $3m? I wonder how much it would cost to then digitize all those tracks that are currently not available anywhere.

Sellaband: I’m starting to understand it

Sellaband

As some of you will know we had Pim Betist from Sellaband as our guest speaker at our last OpenMusicMedia Meet which turned out to be highly interesting. I don’t think we got very far that night in exploring the ‘1000 True Fans‘ idea which was the topic of the night but I certainly started to understand his crowd sourcing platform for musicians. Those are the things that became obvious after that night:

  • the service does not exist to serve long-tail artists, the aim is to get major record deals for their artists
  • they are very successful, having already collected $50,000 for 24 artists (each of course) and much more for artists that have not yet reached that threshold
  • having a founder who is not from a music background was certainly a plus for Sellaband, you can see Pim’s energy and how he reacted to criticism from people in the room
Pim was also so kind to invite me over to his SellaBration last week in Amsterdam (thanks for that Pim!). There were more lessions to be learned:
  • many or the ‘Sellabands’ were actually really good. I especially loved Electric Eel Shock
  • after talking to some of those bands you can see how much work they had to put in until they reached the $50,000. One guy was saying that he was spending 3 months sending 10,000s of emails and making 1000s of calls to collect that money
  • By filling the Paradiso venue that night they really showed that they managed to build a real community around that site, some of which came from abroad to see their bands playing
My final thoughts: Sellaband has made crowd sourcing for bands work, at least for some bands. Will it replace existing music industry structures? No. Will it has it’s valid place in the music ecosystem? Most certainly yes.

My p2p replacement: Peel

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Last.fm, Pandora, imeem and all the others are great for discovering and listening to music but I need the files too. The simple reason is that I want to play the tracks on my radio show and I need the sound file in a decent quality for that (192kbps mp3 at least).

Getting the tracks from the labels, iTunes or even from peer-to-peer networks has always been a good solution for me but for a few months I’ve been using Peel, a great mp3 blog reader, player and download tool. All you need to do is give Peel the mp3 blog URL and it will check automaticall which tracks are available on there, lets you listen to them and adds them to your iTunes library if needed.

For my purposes this is perfect:

  • I don’t need to go to various mp3 blogs every week to see what’s new on there
  • No more right-click and ‘save as’
  • Since many of those blogs would write about new tracks/artist I always find music that is relevant for my show (I prefer to play new music but don’t do that exclusively)
Is this ‘legal’? I gave up on figuring that out a while ago. It is common knowledge that many labels make music available for free download on mp3 blogs but also that some blogs don’t care about those labels and therefore post up complete albums. At this point I would normally start to talk about online licensing and how blanket licenses (that make sense) could be the solution for this but I leave that for some other time…
